Fiberscopic Examination of the Colon Diseases

Abstract
Illustrations of the flexible fiberoptic colonoscope, details of the operating procedure and several cases with disorders in the colon were presented.
In 85 cases with flexible colonofiberscopic examinations, there were the following diagnosis; 61 colitis, 3 ulcerative colitis, 2 irradiation colitis, 12 polyps (9 single, 2 multiple and I Peutz-Jeghers syndrome), and 7 malignancies (5 adenocarcinoma, 1 adenomatous polyp with malignant change, 1 malignant lymphoma). Ages of patients were 14 to 78 years.
Photography and punch biopsy under direct vision were performed. There were no severe complaints and complications from patients during or after the procedures.
In recent years, endoscopic examination of the upper G-I tract has markedly progressed whereas endoscopy of the colon still depends mainly upon the stiff proctoscope in, which the observation field of the scope is 20 to 30cm from the anus.
Reviewing references concerning diseases of the colon, in the locational incidence, it has been pointed out that about 70 % of all diseases of the colon are -in sigmoid colon.
In some cases, however, morbid changes are localized in the proximal part of the colon. Furthermore, x-ray examination of lesions of the rectum, sigmoid and upper sigmoid colon is very difficult due to overlapping of the intestinal loops and because the bowel is unreachable for manual compression study, misdiagnosis is often.
Consequently, it will be of vast significance and advantage if endoscopy of. proximal colon can be performed.
The author is convinced that.colonofiberscope is one of the most valuable and indispensable tool as x-ray examinations in the diagnosis and treatment such as endoscopic polypectomy of the colon diseases.
